This or That! On the left, the original costume M This or That!
On the left, the original costume Marilyn was to have worn when she performed “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. On the right, the last minute replacement, required as it was discovered that the stunning nude girl on red velvet in the 1951 calendar photos “New Wrinkle” and “Golden Dreams” was none other than Hollywood’s new “it girl,” Marilyn Monroe. Hollywood execs wanted a more demure and presentable costume, as compared to the sparkly, sexy burlesque themed costume. Both were designed by Travilla. Which do you prefer? #marilynmonroe

Made a pretty cool discovery over the weekend. For Made a pretty cool discovery over the weekend. For the Italian version of the Some Like it Hot film poster, it appears as if Marilyn wears the black cocktail dress that I now own. There are lots of similarities between the artist rendition for the poster and the actual dress, from the way the fabric is layered around the shoulders, to the plunging neckline, to the slit at the hem on the right side. And, the timeframe is the same. The film was released in 1959, and Marilyn is photographed wearing this black dress at the American Academy of Arts and Letters Awards Ceremony on May 20, 1959 in New York City. Now I have to buy the poster! #marilynmonroe
