In remembrance of another screen legend, the one a In remembrance of another screen legend, the one and only Judy Garland, who passed away on this date in 1969.

These photos show Garland greeting Marilyn at her table at the 19th annual Golden Globes ceremony on March 5, 1962. That year, Judy won the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Judgment at Nuremberg, but Rita Moreno won for West Side Story. Interesting point of note: George Chakiris won Best Supporting Actor for West Side Story, and Chakiris happened to be a backup dancer in several of Marilyn’s films! Of course, Marilyn herself won the Golden Globe for “World Film Favorite-Female.”

Rest in peace Judy. 👼

And now, getting back to the basics… Highlights And now, getting back to the basics… Highlights from The Marilyn Monroe Collection: Marilyn’s Personal Black Wool Jacket with Mink Fur Collar, and her Solid Brass Table Lamp from the Offices of Marilyn Monroe Productions.

A fellow Marilyn fan came over for a visit this weekend, and we had a “show and tell.” While I was at it a snapped a photo that reunites two items from the collection that were together when Marilyn was alive: Her black wool jacket and her brass lamp.

The photo of Marilyn with the lamp was taken while she was being interviewed in 1955 inside the offices of her production company, which was jointly shared with Milton Greene’s photography studio at 480 Lexington Avenue in New York.

This jacket was a favorite of Marilyn’s considering the many times she was photographed wearing it throughout 1955 and into 1956, when she wore it while on location when in London to film The Prince and the Showgirl.

About the acquisition of these items:

The mink collar was originally sold at Christie’s in 1999. It was part of a larger lot of furs that included Marilyn’s personal white fox muff, some white fox accessories, a pink ostrich feather boa, and a smaller fur collar. The original buyer from Christie’s resold all of these items at Christie’s again in 2006, which is where I bought them.

The lamp was also auctioned at Christie’s in 1999. The original buyer resold that lamp at Julien’s Auctions in 2020, which is where and when I bought it.

The black jacket was with the Marilyn Monroe estate until 2016, when it went to auction at Julien’s, and that’s where and when I acquired it. Interesting point of note: The black jacket still holds many single strands of Marilyn’s blonde hair.

Marilyn Monroe and Orry Kelly in a fitting for her Marilyn Monroe and Orry Kelly in a fitting for her costumes for 1959’s “Some Like it Hot.” 🔥

Kelly won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for his work on this film. Overall, he was nominated a total of four times, and he won the coveted gold statue three times. He won in 1952 for “An American in Paris,” and 1958 for “Le Girls.” He was nominated again in 1963 for “Gypsy” but did not win.

His Oscar award for “Some Like it Hot” is currently on display at Warner Brothers Studios in Hollywood, and can be seen as part of the studio tour. They’ll even let you hold it!

While Marilyn won many, many awards for her acting, including the French and Italian equivalent of the Oscar, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences never recognized her work or talents with an Oscar nod. Thanks to @la_woman_tours for the photos of the award.

Happy Father’s Day! While she never had a relat Happy Father’s Day!

While she never had a relationship with her real father (Stanley C. Gifford), there was a man in her life that she called “Dad.” Isidore Miller, the father of Marilyn’s third husband Arthur.

In recognition of Father’s Day today, and the very special relationship Marilyn had with Isidore, showcased here is a letter he sent Marilyn dated February 22, 1962, which today is part of the Marilyn Monroe Collection’s archives. He’s writing to her after her recent visit to see him in Florida.

Swipe left to read the letter, and to see the image that’s believed to be the photo he enclosed. Sadly, the photo wasn’t found with this letter.

Marilyn was introduced by Arthur to his parents one day in the fall of 1955 as “the girl I’m going to marry.” They hit it off right away. Arthur’s sister Joan said, “She adored my father. She was comfortable with my father, and he adored her…She felt she could tell him anything and if she said, ‘I’d like this to be between you and me,’ it would only be between her and him.”

On many occasions Isidore and August visited Marilyn and Arthur at their Fifty-seventh Street apartment, where Marilyn would cook food for Isidore, and dote on him if he was unwell; a luxury she had never had with her own father.

Isidore was proud of his friendship with Marilyn. Marilyn kept in regular touch with him, writing him long letters which began “Dear Dad.” In February 1962 she visited him in Florida, concerned that he was lonely after his wife had died. For three days she took him out and about. After she left, Isidore found $200 stuffed into an overcoat pocket. “You see, Marilyn wanted me to protect her, but she also protected me.”

Three months after her visit to Florida, he was thrilled when Marilyn invited him to be her escort as she went to Madison Square Garden to sing the breathiest and most famous rendition of “Happy Birthday” ever sung. That evening she proudly introduced Isidore to the President as “my former father-in-law,” and brought him along as an escort to the party afterward.

Born on June 10, 1884, in Austria, Miller passed away in June of 1966, four years after Marilyn.
