Marilyn Monroe’s Personal Moravian Star Light

Purchased for Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood Home at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive

From Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home, this geometric hanging light features opaque white glass panels set within a metal framework, forming a striking star shaped design. It’s believed the fixture was one of several decorative pieces Marilyn acquired during her trips to Mexico as she furnished her newly purchased Spanish style residence in 1962. After Marilyn’s passing, the light remained in the home and was later sold to the Nunez family, who purchased the property along with several items that had belonged to her.

The fixture is visible in period photographs of the Brentwood residence, suspended from the ceiling of the back porch just off the kitchen. In the accompanying floor plan, the blue circle indicates the precise location where the white star light once hung. A photograph of Marilyn’s kitchen shows the doorway leading directly into that porch space, anchoring this object to a documented and intimate area of her final home.

Collector’s Note

Fifth Helena Drive was the only home Marilyn ever owned. She purchased it in early 1962 and was actively furnishing it at the time of her death. This light was among the pieces she selected herself, possibly acquired during her trips to Mexico as she worked to shape the interior on her own terms.

It is not a glamorous object. That is part of what makes it significant. It hung in a functional, private area of her home, in a space she moved through daily.
