The Billy Travilla designed white halterneck dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in the Seven Year Itch has been voted the most iconic screen costume via a survey commissioned by the British Heart Foundation. It’s no surprise that the billowing white gown topped this survey. Every time a celebrity or a member of a royal family has a hem that billows in the wind the press refers to it as a “Marilyn Monroe moment.”
Costumes rounding out the top five are:
2. Dorothy’s blue and white gingham dress and ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz.
3. Olivia Newton-John’s infamous Grease “bad girl” black outfit worn in the final scenes of the film.
4. The bikini worn by Ursula Andress as she emerges from the sea in Dr No.
5. The black Hubert de Givenchy cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
Included in the top 10 list are the red Baywatch swimming costumes, cartoon character Jessica Rabbit’s glittering split-to-the-thigh red dress and Michael Jackson’s red leather Thriller costume.
