The Marilyn Monroe community was thrilled and elated to learn that the private collection of Monroe Six member Frieda Hull would be joining the David Gainsborough-Roberts collection and the Lee Strasberg archives at the November Marilyn Monroe auction hosted by Julien’s Auctions.
Upon acquiring this collection, Darren Julien contacted me for help with cataloging this massive compilation. For weeks I worked to organize Frieda’s collection for the auction catalog. Photos below show Frieda’s Marilyn Monroe snapshots spread out across my desk and table as I worked to get it all organized. It was an honor for me to work on Frieda’s photos, and to see so many unseen images and slides of Marilyn was an extra benefit.
The Frieda Hull Marilyn Monroe Photo Archive included over 550 color and black & white candid snapshots and photographs, over 150 color slides, nearly 750 movie stills, publicity photos and lobby cards, and personal home movies. The collection also included locks of Marilyn Monroe’s hair, autographed photos and snapshots, Frieda Hull’s original ticket and program to a 1962 JFK Madison Square Garden gala, a Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller autographed Gladstone Hotel menu, Frieda’s “Monroe Six” badge, a scarf Marilyn gifted to Frieda, a Marilyn Monroe calendar, and vintage Marilyn Monroe albums. All totaled, an unprecedented 142 lots of photos were offered in the auction, the majority of which were taken by members of the Monroe Six.
